Gethen’s
is an example of contributing to the theme of isolation and loneliness because
he likes to think of himself as a tropical bird and he gives an example of that
in chapter 3 when he says the fireplace does no good. Their type of kind learn
to live with and without the cold environment that is now a part of them. I believe
that he’s referring to is the lack of mental and physical warmth in gethen.
However that goes for everyone whenever you feel cold you begin to feel lonely
and worthless, which leads to depression. But for Genly it’s strange for him
when he sees a lack of emotion and the lack of relationships. Genly and the
state of isolation from his own kind, is always alone in the cold planet with
no one to talk to or keep him company. Which is understandable as to why Genly
would feel loneliness and become so cold. However gethenians do things completely
different then we humans do. They reproduce without having any emotional
connection with the other individual whereas with humans we find the right
person we want to be with by spending quality time with them to better
understand their personal qualities and not just their physical appearances. In
my personal opinion I think if humans would participate in kemmering instead of
taking vows to be devoted to one person only it would be pretty weird. There
would be kids with more than one father and women with more than one baby daddies.
I’m kind of glad we don’t kemmer that means there’s enough men for everyone.

Yeah all about gethenians is really different from us. Genly is not much of a relationship and emotional type of guy and likes to be in the outside circle.
ReplyDeleteIt's understandable that Genly would feel depressed after being so much isolated. He's the only one that feels different; the unique one in this planet. He's like an alien to them, meaning it shows that they might think totally different.

Its pretty common for one to feel isolated especially when your technically an alien like Genly on another planet with another race of humans that are somewhat different from you. I can understand Genly from his point of view.
