What Can We Do To Change Our Food System?

We can stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages.
You can lose 25 lbs in a year by replacing one 20 oz soda a day with a no-calorie beverage.
We can eat at home instead of eating out.
Children consume almost twice as many calories when eating food prepared outside the home.
Tell schools to stop selling sodas, junk food, and sports drinks.
Over the last two decades, rates of obesity have tripled in children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years. Don't eat meat as often because that's one of the reasons there's obesity.
We should buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides.
According to the EPA, over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used each year in the U.S.
There should be a demand in job protections for farm workers and food processors, ensuring fair wages and other protections.
Poverty among farm workers is more than twice that of all wage and salary employees. I believe that if we begin to make our own healthy food or moreover our healthy meal plans, it will lead to a healthier life-style for everyone.

  1. Hi Leslie! The statistic that you shared about drinking soda is really interesting. 25 pounds is a lot of weight that people could lose if they just stopped drinking soda. It's depressing to think of how cheap and accessible soda is to consumers. High fructose corn syrup, which is a sweetener made from corn, has helped make soda so cheap. This is problematic because cheap food and drink translates to attractive food and drink. The price, combined with soda's sweet taste and high caffeine levels, serves to make soft drinks very tantalizing to consumers. Great post Leslie!

  2. I like how you added these facts or stats about eating healthier and all that. Its really opening to be able to see how not drinking soda can benefit your health. There's one thing about seeing how some of this stuff can be really effective and actually taking action and actually doing some of this stuff. I think I'm gonna try to do some of these things like, no soda for a year. At least, I'll try. :)
